Battleship is a turn based strategy game for the Nintendo DS, 3DS and Wii, developped with Magic Pockets.
There were two big constraints in the development of this game: very limited time and technical limitations. The game is inspired by Advance Wars but is in 3D. As the game needed to work on the DS as well as on the 3DS, we had to limitate the number of ships on the screen. So I added some rules:
– The player can’t build his own ships. Instead, he can reach a port and get a new ship each turn, chosen among a limited list.
– Ships have 3 sizes: 1×1, 2×2 and 3×3 ships will take more space on the map, thus allowing to display less ships.
– Ships cannot pass through each other. The player has to manage the flow of his ships and will prefer to scatter them.
These rules helped design a new strategy for the player: he add to think on how to move his ships in order not to get stuck or lose a turn.
